"Many of these children do not have a stable family situation that gives them the one-on-one attention they need to learn and read effectively," says Jim Weber, AkronReads tutor and City of Akron employee. "In only one hour a week, you can see the difference in their skill level and their confidence."  

Just one hour a week. That’s all it takes to instill pride and self-confidence in a child and help set them on a path toward success.

"I always look forward to seeing the smiles on the faces of the students when they get through a difficult word.  It is so rewarding to know they are proud of themselves," says tutor Karen Carbaugh of Akron Children’s Hospital. "They can see that they truly have it in themselves to achieve their goal."

AkronReads allows tutors to establish meaningful relationships and connections by meeting with the same student(s) throughout the academic year.

"I can honestly say that just about every time I tutor, it feels like the most rewarding experience I've ever had," says tutor Ron Brubaker of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. "The look on my student's face when he sees that I am there, the shy sideways hug he always gives me, seeing how hard he works to learn – it’s all so positive."
