AkronReads is a community volunteer tutoring partnership of the Akron Public Schools, businesses, organizations, parents and students working to ensure Akron’s youngest students can read at grade level. Started in 1999, AkronReads is an outgrowth of OhioReads, the education initiative started by former Ohio Governor Bob Taft. Working in conjunction with the Akron Public Schools Literacy Initiative, AkronReads is the model for collaborative tutoring partnerships in Ohio.

The goals of our program are to:

  • Help students improve their reading skills and foster an appreciation for reading.
  • Recruit and train tutors to provide one-on-one reading assistance for third graders in the Akron Public Schools.
  • Nurture students with knowledge and compassion.
  • Assist businesses, government, nonprofit and civic organizations in developing, managing and sustaining an AkronReads partnership with the Akron Public Schools.
  • Increase the number of community partners in the program.
