Great Impact

In the 2009-2010 school year, AkronReads tutors helped more than 1,300 Akron Public Schools students improve their reading skills. More than 500 volunteers are committed to the AkronReads partnership. They see the difference they’re making in the lives of children and consider it an investment in the lives of tomorrow’s leaders.

"There is nothing more special than helping someone read," says Faye Dowdell, Akron Automobile Club employee. "Seeing the impact you can have on the life of a child is very rewarding."

It doesn’t take long to see the difference you’re making. Many students are so motivated by the one-on-one attention that they make substantial progress right away.

"We have seen a definite improvement in our students’ reading skills in a rather short period of time," says Connie Kordon of Malcolm Pirnie, Inc.

It’s never too late. Volunteers are encouraged to get involved any time during the year.

Great Need

Not only does AkronReads play an important role in Akron Public Schools' focused efforts in literacy, it helps young learners connect with local business leaders. This one-on-one setting inspires students to achieve at higher levels.

"About 20 percent of American workers have low basic [reading] skills and 75 percent of chronically unemployed adults have reading or writing difficulties.   Reading is a skill that will make a difference in the development of productive citizens."

Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic, City of Akron

A little of your time could make a big difference. With more than 2200 third graders to tutor and roughly 500 tutors, we need all hands on deck.

Grave Consequences

Literacy is central to a thriving, productive society. According to begintoread.com, two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare. You can help remedy this situation by giving just one hour a week. More than 500 tutors and 24 Akron area businesses and organizations have joined to give our children increased odds of success. Every child deserves the tools they need to reach their goals and dreams. Won’t you help?
